A new Computer Centre established!
In August-September 2009 Association Education for Peace purchased new computers, a laser printer, a digital camera for photo documentation and other electronic devices to be installed in a computer centre we have established in the Krakal village, the Mumuret Valley, (Bumburet), the Chitral District, Pakistan. Those computers are the first ones the Kalash have ever got a chance to use.
Thanks to Association Education for Peace the power to supply the computers comes from the newly installed solar batteries and UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies). There is a severe shortage of power in the valleys inhabited by the Kalash, and the only active source of electric power is a small hydroelectric power plant that generates current with a voltage of 50-80 Volt.
We have also given our financial support to provide the computer room with simple furniture and a wiring system.
The Kalash took an active part in completing the project.
Our aid project came into existence as a response to the request issued by the representatives of the Kalash themselves. They point out that in order to preserve their ancient culture that becomes increasingly vulnerable to Muslim influences, they need to raise their level of education. Unless the Kalash receive proper education, they will remain uncompetitive in the existing job market. According to the Kalash, education is the key to improve their living conditions. They view the abilities to speak English and operate computers as most relevant factors that can help them increase their chances of becoming competitive employees and preserve their culture.
In November-December 2009 a special training course for future computer teachers was organized with the help of a computer specialist from the University of Chitral, Pakistan.
